HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.292
The Speaker, on behalf of the entire membership of the House of
Representatives, offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution of tribute offered as a memorial for Michael
2 Griffin, former member of the House of Representatives.
3 Whereas, It was with great sorrow that the members of the
4 House of Representatives learned about the passing of Michael
5 Griffin. He will be remembered as a dedicated public servant by his
6 constituents in the Jackson area and the people of the State of
7 Michigan; and
8 Whereas, Michael Griffin was born in Jackson, Michigan and
9 proudly served his country in the United States Army as a young
10 man. Before beginning his nearly three-decade long career as a
11 public servant, he studied Public Administration at the University
12 of Michigan and had a career in manufacturing. After returning to

1 his hometown of Jackson, Michael Griffin began working tirelessly
2 for the city he loved and its residents. He was proud of his
3 hometown and always put its people first. He was also an active
4 member of Jackson’s Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church. He
5 is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Janet, seven children,
6 eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and
7 Whereas, Michael Griffin was first elected to the House of
8 Representatives in 1972, where he would faithfully serve his
9 constituents for the next twenty-six years. During his tenure in
10 the House of Representatives, Michael Griffin served on numerous
11 committees including the House Committees on Elections, Urban
12 Affairs, and City Government. He was commended by many for his work
13 on revising Michigan’s 1976 Item Pricing Law; and
14 Whereas, The influence of Michael Griffin’s legacy has and
15 will continue to inspire others to follow in his footsteps as an
16 elected official, including his children. Martin, his son, served
17 as Jackson’s mayor from 1995 to 2006 and was elected to the
18 Michigan House of Representatives in 2006. Another son, John,
19 served as a Jackson City Commissioner. He is celebrated by his
20 family as a fair and honest man with a passion for learning and
21 reading in addition to being a huge Detroit Tigers fan. Fondly
22 known as “Mick,” he was regarded by his colleagues as a patient and
23 humble public servant; and
24 Whereas, Upon Michael Griffin’s passing, we offer our
25 condolences to his loved ones. His contributions to this chamber
26 and the State of Michigan will be remembered; now, therefore, be it
27 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we offer this
28 expression of our highest tribute to honor the memory of Michael
29 Griffin, a member of the House of Representatives from 1972 to

1 1998; and be it further
2 Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the
3 Griffin family as evidence of our lasting esteem for his memory.
