HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.297
Reps. Harris, Alexander, Bezotte, MacDonell and Rheingans
offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare September 11-17, 2024, as Patriot Week
2 in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, The events that led to the signing of the
4 Constitution of the United States by the delegates to the
5 Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787, have significance
6 for every citizen of the United States and are honored in public
7 schools across the United States on Constitution Day, which is
8 September 17 of each year; and
9 Whereas, The rule of law, the social compact, democracy,
10 liberty, equality, and unalienable human rights are the essential
11 values upon which the United States flourishes; and

1 Whereas, Diversity is one of the greatest strengths of the
2 United States, and the motto inscribed on the Great Seal of the
3 United States, "E pluribus unum", Latin for "out of many, one",
4 symbolizes that individuals in the United States from all walks of
5 life are unified by shared values; and
6 Whereas, Exceptional, visionary, and indispensable individuals
7 such as Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, John Adams, John Marshall,
8 George Washington, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Rosa
9 Parks, Harriet Tubman, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Martin
10 Luther King, Jr., Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison founded or
11 advanced the United States; and
12 Whereas, The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of
13 the United States, the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions
14 signed in Seneca Falls, New York, the Gettysburg Address, the
15 Emancipation Proclamation, and the "I Have a Dream" speech
16 delivered by Martin Luther King, Jr., express sentiments that have
17 advanced liberty in the United States; and
18 Whereas, The Bennington flag (commonly known as the "76
19 flag"), the Betsy Ross flag, the current flag of the United States,
20 the flag of the women’s suffrage movement, the Union flag (commonly
21 known as the "Fort Sumter flag"), the Gadsden flag, and the flags
22 of the States are physical symbols of the history of the United
23 States: now, therefore, be it
24 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
25 this legislative body declare September 11-17, 2024, as Patriot
26 Week in the state of Michigan. We recognize that understanding the
27 history of the United States and the first principles of the United
28 States is indispensable to the survival of the United States as a
29 free people; acknowledge in great reverence to the victims of the

1 September 11, 2001, attacks, that citizens of the United States
2 should take time to honor the first principles, founders,
3 documents, and symbols of their history; recognize that each
4 generation should renew the spirit of the United States based on
5 the first principles, historical figures, founding documents, and
6 symbols of the United States; and encourage citizens, schools and
7 other educational institutions, and federal, state, and local
8 governments and their agencies to recognize and participate in
9 Patriot Week by honoring, celebrating, and promoting the study of
10 the history of the United States so that all people of the United
11 States may offer the reverence that is due to the free republic.
