SENATE RESOLUTION NO.135
Senators Hoitenga, Albert and Theis offered the following
resolution:
1 A resolution to commemorate June 27, 2024, as Post-Traumatic
2 Stress Injury (PTSI) Awareness Day.
3 Whereas, The brave men and women of the United States (U.S.)
4 Armed Forces risk their lives to protect the freedom of our nation
5 and deserve an unwavering commitment of resources to ensure their
6 lasting physical, mental, and emotional well-being; and
7 Whereas, It is estimated that more than 2.5 million U.S.
8 service members have deployed around the world since the events of
9 September 11, 2001; and
10 Whereas, Thousands of service members have deployed multiple
11 times to combat zones, placing them at high risk of post-traumatic

1 stress; and
2 Whereas, Approximately 200,000 U.S. military personnel leave
3 the service each year, and thousands of them are from Michigan,
4 with their military service exposing many of them to traumatic
5 life-threatening events; and
6 Whereas, Post-traumatic stress significantly increases the
7 risk of depression, suicide, and drug or alcohol-related disorders
8 and deaths; and
9 Whereas, Thousands of Michigan corrections professionals, law
10 enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders also
11 face high incidence rates of post-traumatic stress as they face
12 extreme danger protecting the public; and
13 Whereas, While significant advancements have been made by the
14 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other entities to diagnose,
15 prevent, and treat PTSI, many challenges remain; and
16 Whereas, The establishment of a Post-Traumatic Stress Injury
17 Awareness Day in Michigan raises public awareness about issues
18 related to PTSI; now, therefore, be it
19 Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative
20 body commemorate June 27, 2024, as Post-Traumatic Stress Injury
21 (PTSI) Awareness Day; and be it further
22 Resolved, That we urge the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency
23 and other state departments to continue working to educate service
24 members, veterans, the families of service members and veterans,
25 and the public about the causes, symptoms, and treatment of PTSI;
26 and be it further
27 Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the
28 Governor.
