HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.282
Reps. Scott, Brabec, Breen, Byrnes, Haadsma, Hope, MacDonell,
Rheingans, Wegela and Wilson offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare June 17, 2024, as Black Men Awareness
2 Day in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, Black Men Awareness Day is to recognize the
4 achievements and contributions of Black men, and the significant
5 role they play towards enhancing the family and the community in
6 which they live; and
7 Whereas, Black Men Awareness Day is a day where Black men come
8 together to highlight the positive impact they make on the
9 community every single day and inspire more Black youth and men to
10 serve their family and community; and
11 Whereas, Black Men Awareness Day is a day to bring awareness

1 to the hurdles and adversities that Black men experience and
2 conquer in the face of systemic racism and cultural barriers, and
3 to honor the unique accomplishments of Black men in our state
4 despite these struggles; and
5 Whereas, Black men play significant roles in society. They are
6 politicians, construction workers, doctors, barbers, lawyers,
7 police officers, accountants, educators, bankers, machine
8 operators, electricians, business owners, auto workers, plumbers,
9 bus drivers, caregivers, social workers, and countless other
10 professions that help people within the community every day. Above
11 all, they are sons, husbands, fathers, brothers, nephews, friends,
12 and co-workers; and
13 Whereas, Black Men Awareness Day serves to recognize the
14 strength of Black men, and highlight prominent Black men throughout
15 history, and all the contributions that Black men give to the
16 community, no matter how major or minor they may be; now,
17 therefore, be it
18 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
19 this legislative body declare June 17, 2024, as Black Men Awareness
20 Day in the state of Michigan.
