SENATE RESOLUTION NO.128
Senators McMorrow, Brinks, Cherry, Geiss, Hertel, McCann,
Polehanki and Wojno offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to commemorate June 2024 as Gun Violence
2 Awareness Month.
3 Whereas, We honor and remember all victims and survivors of
4 gun violence, especially those affected by the tragedies at
5 Michigan State University, as well as Oxford High School; and
6 Whereas, The effects of gun violence in the United States is
7 pervasive and all-encompassing on every community; and
8 Whereas, Since 1968, more individuals have died from guns in
9 the United States than have died in the battlefields of all the
10 wars in United States' history; and
11 Whereas, In 2024, over 17,000 Americans have already lost

1 their lives to gun violence, including nearly 100 children under
2 the age of 11; and
3 Whereas, June 2, 2024, will mark the 27th birthday of Hadiya
4 Pendleton, a teenager who marched in President Obama’s second
5 inaugural parade and was tragically shot and killed just three
6 weeks later; and
7 Whereas, Following Hadiya’s death, her friends and classmates
8 organized the “Wear Orange” movement to honor her life and all
9 those whose lives have been impacted by gun violence. Today, orange
10 is nationally recognized as the defining color of the gun violence
11 prevention movement; and
12 Whereas, By wearing orange and commemorating National Gun
13 Violence Awareness Month, Americans will raise awareness about gun
14 violence and honor the lives and lost human potential of Americans
15 stolen by gun violence; now, therefore, be it
16 Resolved by the Senate, That the members of this legislative
17 body commemorate June 2024 as Gun Violence Awareness Month; and be
18 it further
19 Resolved, That we encourage all citizens to support their
20 communities’ efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence
21 and to honor and value human life.
