HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.268
Reps. Weiss and Rheingans offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare May 25, 2024, as Africa Day in the
2 state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, Africa Day refers to the annual commemoration on May
4 25th that celebrates the founding of the Organization of African
5 Unity (OAU), now known as the African Union, on that date in 1963;
6 and
7 Whereas, Michigan is proud to recognize May 25 as Africa Day,
8 in alignment with the global commemoration of the founding of the
9 Organization of African Unity (OAU), now known as the African
10 Union, on this day in 1963, and in acknowledgment of the long-
11 lasting contributions of Black African descendants and Black
12 migrant residents of the State of Michigan

1 Whereas, Africa Day offers us an opportunity to celebrate the
2 rich heritage, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of
3 Africa and its diaspora to the global community. Our state is home
4 to approximately 42,000 immigrants from Africa and
5 Whereas, The state of Michigan values the deep historical
6 ties and the vibrant cultural exchange between Michigan and the
7 African continent, fostered by our diverse African community and
8 Whereas, The observance of Africa Day across Michigan promotes
9 a greater understanding and appreciation of the African continent's
10 history, its current achievements, and its future potential, as
11 well as the contribution of its migrant residents in the state; and
12 Whereas, Through educational programs, activities, and
13 ceremonies, schools, communities, and organizations within Michigan
14 are encouraged to explore and celebrate African cultures,
15 histories, and contributions and
16 Whereas, In recognition of Africa Day, we call upon public
17 officials, educators, librarians, and the citizens of Michigan to
18 engage in appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities that
19 honor the spirit and the essence of this important day; now,
20 therefore, be it
21 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
22 this legislative body declare May 25, 2024, as Africa Day in the
23 state of Michigan. We encourage all to uplift and participate in
24 programs, activities, and reflections on the contributions of the
25 African continent and its people to our shared human story.
