HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.260
Reps. Schmaltz, Alexander, Bezotte, Bollin, Fox, Haadsma, Hill,
Liberati, Lightner, MacDonell, Paiz, Schuette, Witwer and Xiong
offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare May 12-18, 2024, as Police Week in the
2 state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as
4 National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which
5 May 15 falls as National Police Week. Established by a joint
6 resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special
7 recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their
8 lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others;
9 and
10 Whereas, There are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers

1 serving in communities across the United States, including the
2 approximately 17,000 full-time uniformed police officers in
3 Michigan. These dedicated individuals serve in more than six
4 hundred state, county, and local departments; and
5 Whereas, Members of law enforcement deserve the appreciation
6 and respect of the people of Michigan for the merit, dignity,
7 bravery, and reliability they exhibit each and every day. We must
8 also honor the sacrifices made by families of police officers, as
9 each day they must face constant fear as their loved one works to
10 protect us; and
11 Whereas, In 2023 alone, 136 law enforcement officers were
12 killed in the line of duty across the country. The names of these
13 dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National
14 Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.; and
15 Whereas, Michigan’s fallen officers will never be forgotten,
16 nor will their service to their respective communities. By choosing
17 to commit themselves to law enforcement, these brave individuals
18 answered the call for service and willingly put their lives in
19 jeopardy. We commend them for recognizing service as a noble
20 career, and protecting the public safety; and
21 Whereas, Michigan citizens have turned to members of law
22 enforcement for assistance and support in times of distress,
23 whether they are coping with a personal crisis, or struggling
24 through civil disorder or a natural disaster. Our communities rely
25 on these courageous individuals when it is difficult to stand on
26 our own, and we are indebted to the unwavering public service of
27 our local and state police. We are indeed fortunate and grateful
28 for the contributions of law enforcement officers to the people of
29 this state; now, therefore, be it

1 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
2 this legislative body declare May 12-18, 2024, as Police Week in
3 the state of Michigan. We publicly salute the service of law
4 enforcement officers in our state and nation and honor police who
5 place their lives on the line for the safety and security of their
6 communities.
