HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.250
Reps. Rogers, Conlin, Brabec, Farhat, MacDonell, Wozniak,
Bezotte, McKinney, Paiz, Herzberg, McFall, Hood, Rheingans, Puri,
Aiyash, Breen, Jaime Greene, Haadsma, Hill, Hope, Wilson, Witwer and
Young offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare May 2024 as Asthma and Allergy
2 Awareness Month in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, Approximately 4.5 million children in the United
4 States currently have asthma; and
5 Whereas, Over 27 million people in the United States, have
6 asthma and the numbers are increasing each year; and
7 Whereas, Over 1 million adults and children in Michigan have
8 asthma; and
9 Whereas, Asthma is one of the most common noncommunicable

1 diseases among children; and
2 Whereas, Nearly 1.5 million individuals per year visit
3 emergency departments because of asthma’s effects; and
4 Whereas, Asthma is a leading cause of hospitalizations and
5 school absences due to a chronic disease among children; and
6 Whereas, The total economic cost of asthma in the United
7 States was $81,900,000,000 per year from 2008 to 2013; and
8 Whereas, Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous individuals in the
9 United States face the highest burden of asthma; and
10 Whereas, Asthma is a manageable disease that claimed the lives
11 of over 3,500 Americans in 2021, including 94 people in Michigan;
12 and
13 Whereas, People with asthma and food allergies need access to
14 affordable health insurance and to the medications and devices they
15 need at affordable prices; and
16 Whereas, Over 20 million people in the United States have food
17 allergies, including about 4,300,000 children; and
18 Whereas, Food allergy has increased among U.S. children over
19 the past 20 years, with the greatest increase in Black children;
20 and
21 Whereas, Children with food allergies are two to four times
22 more likely to have asthma or other allergic diseases; and
23 Whereas, May is an appropriate month to designate as “Asthma
24 and Allergy Awareness Month; now, therefore, be it
25 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
26 this legislative body declare May 2024 as Asthma and Allergy
27 Awareness Month in the state of Michigan. We recognize residents
28 who live with asthma and allergies and to be compassionate of those
29 living with these conditions.
