HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.242
Reps. Young, O'Neal, Brabec, Hood, McFall, Rheingans, Glanville,
Pohutsky, Paiz, McKinney, Brenda Carter, Aiyash, Bezotte, Bollin,
Breen, Tyrone Carter, Fitzgerald, Haadsma, Hill, Hoskins, MacDonell,
Morgan, Morse, Rogers, Schuette, Shannon, Thompson, Weiss, Wilson and
Young offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare May 1, 2024, as Older Michiganians Day
2 in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, According to the 2021 American Community Survey five-
4 year data set, 2,438,552 Michiganians are age 60 or older, equating
5 to 1 of every 4 citizens being an older adult as defined by the
6 Older Americans Act; and
7 Whereas, There are more older adults than children under the
8 age of 18 in our state (2,188,856); and

1 Whereas, There are more older adults than pre-k through 12th
2 grade students in our state (1,624,039); and
3 Whereas, Ten thousand Americans celebrate their 65th birthday
4 every day and become eligible for Medicare; and
5 Whereas, Older Michiganians are critical to Michigan's
6 economy, workforce, educational systems, faith-based institutions,
7 charitable organizations, and institutions of government; and
8 Whereas, Many amongst them survived the Great Depression,
9 sacrificed at home and abroad to defeat fascism and imperialism in
10 World War II, built the post-war American economy, advocated for
11 civil rights, led our state into the 21st Century and have now
12 lived through the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic; and
13 Whereas, Older adults deserve our utmost respect and gratitude
14 for their many contributions to our communities. Older citizens
15 play vital leadership, volunteer, and mentoring roles all across
16 our great state. Their lifetime contributions are immense and
17 immeasurable in sum, while also being deeply personal, impactful,
18 and meaningful on an individual basis; and
19 Whereas, Older adults are one of our state's greatest
20 resources for understanding our past and improving our future. They
21 are truly a foundation upon which we can build a better tomorrow;
22 and
23 Whereas, This invaluable group of citizens is being honored
24 and admired for their many years of service in communities large
25 and small across the entire state of Michigan. They have been an
26 indispensable source of knowledge and inspiration throughout the
27 years; now, therefore, be it
28 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
29 this legislative body declare May 1, 2024, as Older Michiganians

1 Day in the state of Michigan. We honor our state’s population of
2 older citizens.
