MacDonell, Martus, McFall, Skaggs, Rheingans, Morgan, Arbit, Shannon,
Weiss, Fitzgerald, Glanville, Koleszar, Wilson, Haadsma, McKinney,
Rogers, Churches, Aiyash, Breen, Tyrone Carter, Hill, Hoskins, Morse,
Paiz, Xiong and Young offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare May 1, 2024, as International Workers’
2 Day in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, May 1 is globally recognized as International
4 Workers’ Day and is publicly celebrated in over 80 countries; and
5 Whereas, This international day of labor celebrates the
6 contribution of workers, promotes workers’ rights, and commemorates
7 the historic struggles and gains made by workers and the labor
8 movement; and

1 Whereas, May 1 commemorates the events of the Haymarket Affair
2 and the associated general strike, which led to the establishment
3 of an important day of remembrance and a long-lasting call to
4 action; and
5 Whereas, International Workers’ Day is the declaration of the
6 labor movement’s demands to improve the working conditions of
7 workers, such as better pay, shorter working days, and safer worker
8 conditions; and
9 Whereas, We celebrate International Workers’ Day as a yearly
10 expression of these demands; and
11 Whereas, We honor the bitter struggles of the working class
12 and the many sufferings of the past; and
13 Whereas, The United Auto Workers was formed in Detroit in 1935
14 during the Flint Sit-Down Strike, putting Michigan at the forefront
15 of the modern labor movement as America struggled with the distress
16 of the Great Depression; and
17 Whereas, Michigan continues its legacy as a leader in the
18 national labor movement and its efforts to bring economic justice
19 and social justice to our state and nation; and
20 Whereas, Recognition of the integrity of Michigan’s workforce
21 and its achievements is important in advancing the economic growth
22 of our state; and
23 Whereas, The Michigan House of Representatives wishes to
24 respect and highlight the contributions of Michigan’s workforce to
25 the State and all of society; and
26 Whereas, The Michigan House of Representatives renews our
27 efforts to improve working conditions, including workplace safety
28 and health protections, better standards, and enforcement, and fair
29 and just compensation; now, therefore, be it

1 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
2 this legislative body declare May 1, 2024, as International
3 Workers’ Day in the state of Michigan.
