HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.230
Reps. Weiss, Breen, Fitzgerald, Glanville, Haadsma, Hill,
MacDonell, Rheingans and Rogers offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to urge the Michigan Department of Labor and
2 Economic Opportunity, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health
3 Administration, the United States Department of Labor -
4 Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and all those
5 responsible for the safety of Michigan’s workers to do everything
6 in their power to decrease workplace injuries and deaths and make
7 worksites safer for all hardworking Michiganders.
8 Whereas, Both federal and Michigan law promise every worker
9 the right to a safe workplace. Michigan’s Occupational Safety and
10 Health Act declares that all employees shall be provided safe and
11 healthful work environments free of recognized hazards; and
12 Whereas, Still, workplace hazards kill and disable

1 approximately 125,000 workers each year – approximately 5,000 from
2 traumatic injuries and an estimated 120,000 from occupational
3 disease. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated
4 that there were 5,486 workplace fatalities in 2022, meaning a
5 worker died every 96 minutes from an occupational injury; and
6 Whereas, The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reported
7 that 139 Michigan workers lost their lives in workplace accidents
8 in 2022. Untold more suffered disabling injuries and illnesses. As
9 recently as March 21, 2024, a young Michigander - only 22 years old
10 - was fatally crushed during a workplace accident; and
11 Whereas, Michigan’s workforce is the backbone of this state’s
12 economic growth. Workers should not have to suffer workplace
13 catastrophes, occupational-related diseases, or injuries due to
14 dangerous work conditions. Every effort needs to be made to
15 improve workplace health and safety conditions, to increase
16 workplace safety standards and enforcement, and to provide
17 hardworking Michiganders with fair and just compensations; now,
18 therefore, be it
19 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That we urge the
20 Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, the Michigan
21 Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the United States
22 Department of Labor - Occupational Safety and Health
23 Administration, and all those responsible for the safety of
24 Michigan’s workers to do everything in their power to decrease
25 workplace injuries and deaths and make worksites safer for all
26 hardworking Michiganders; and be it further
27 Resolved, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to the
28 Director of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic
29 Opportunity, the Director of the Michigan Occupational Safety and
