HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.159
Reps. VanWoerkom, Aiyash, Alexander, Bezotte, Bollin, Brabec,
Breen, Churches, Fitzgerald, Fox, Glanville, Haadsma, Hill, Hope,
Koleszar, Lightner, Morse, Paiz, Rheingans, Rogers, Schuette,
Shannon, Weiss, Wilson and Young offered the following resolution:
1 A resolution to declare November 2023 as Diabetes Awareness
2 Month in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, Approximately 965,000 adults and children in Michigan
4 are affected by Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes and approximately 37.3
5 million Americans are affected nationwide; and
6 Whereas, Approximately 63,200 new people are diagnosed with
7 diabetes each year in Michigan; and
8 Whereas, Type 1 diabetes typically presents during childhood
9 or adolescence, but can also develop in adults; and
10 Whereas, The warning signs of Type 1 diabetes include

1 excessive thirst, frequent urination, rapid weight loss, stomach
2 pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness, and are often
3 mistaken for the flu, strep throat, a growth spurt, or a urinary
4 tract infection; and
5 Whereas, In 2019, approximately 283,000 children and
6 adolescents younger than 20 years old had diagnosed diabetes in the
7 United States; and
8 Whereas, The warning signs of Type 2 diabetes include
9 increased thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite, weight
10 loss, fatigue, and dark patches of skin; and
11 Whereas, As childhood obesity increases, there is an ongoing
12 shift of Type 2 Diabetes from an adult disease to one that affects
13 children; and
14 Whereas, The 2022 direct medical cost of diabetes in Michigan
15 was estimated at $7 billion; and
16 Whereas, There is not a cure for Types 1 or 2 diabetes, but
17 the diseases may be manageable through diet, exercise, insulin
18 therapy or other medications; now, therefore, be it
19 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
20 this legislative body declare November 2023 as Diabetes Awareness
21 Month in the state of Michigan.
