SUBSTITUTE FOR
HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 132
1 A resolution to declare September 11-17, 2023, as Patriot Week
2 in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, We recognize that understanding American history is
4 indispensable to the survival of our republic as a free people. In
5 great reverence to the victims of the attacks on September 11,
6 2001, we acknowledge that American citizens must take time to honor
7 our history; and
8 Whereas, The events that led to the signing of the
9 Constitution of the United States of America by the delegates of
10 the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787, have
11 significance for every American. This historical occasion is
12 honored in public schools across the nation on September 17 of each

1 year as Constitution Day; and
2 Whereas, Exceptional, visionary, and indispensable Americans
3 founded and advanced the United States; and
4 Whereas, The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and
5 the congressional resolution forwarding the Constitution to the
6 states, Marbury v. Madison, Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments
7 and Resolutions, the Gettysburg Address, the Emancipation
8 Proclamation, Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act of
9 1964, and the "I Have a Dream" speech are key documents that embody
10 American liberty; and
11 Whereas, The Bennington Flag, the original Betsy Ross American
12 flag, the current American Flag, the Suffragist Flag, the Fort
13 Sumter Flag, and the flag of the state of Michigan are fundamental
14 physical symbols of American history and freedom that should be
15 studied and remembered by each American citizen; now, therefore, be
16 it
17 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
18 this legislative body declare September 11-17, 2023, as Patriot
19 Week in the state of Michigan. We recognize that each generation
20 needs to renew the spirit of America based on historical figures,
21 founding documents, and symbols of America. The citizens, schools,
22 and other educational institutions, government agencies,
23 municipalities, and nonprofit, religious, labor, community, and
24 business organizations are urged to recognize and participate in
25 Patriot Week by honoring and celebrating so that all may offer the
26 reverence that is due to our free republic.
