HOUSE RESOLUTION NO.122
Reps. Scott, Brixie, Aiyash, O'Neal, Neeley, Young, McKinney,
Tyrone Carter, Brenda Carter, Wilson, Wegela, Hoskins, Edwards,
Dievendorf, Rogers, Whitsett, Alexander, Churches, Fitzgerald,
Glanville, Haadsma, Morse, Rheingans and Weiss offered the following
resolution:
1 A resolution to declare June 19-25, 2023, as Pollinators Week
2 in the state of Michigan.
3 Whereas, Pollinator species such as bees and other insects
4 play a vital role in pollination, which is essential for the
5 production of one-third of our food supply; and
6 Whereas, Michigan's agriculture greatly benefits from
7 pollinators, with fruits and vegetables generating over $2 billion
8 in revenue annually. Approximately half of this produce relies on
9 bee pollination; and

1 Whereas, The decline of pollinators, caused by factors such as
2 habitat loss, environmental changes, and monoculture crops, poses a
3 significant threat to our food supply, landscapes, and ecosystems;
4 and
5 Whereas, Supporting Michigan's native plants and creating
6 pollinator-friendly habitats can help mitigate the decline of
7 pollinators, prevent soil erosion, and increase carbon
8 sequestration; and
9 Whereas, Raising awareness about the importance of avoiding
10 pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, as well as promoting the
11 planting of pollinator-friendly plants, is crucial for the
12 preservation and restoration of pollinator populations; and
13 Whereas, Educating the public about the significance of adding
14 natural habitat to farmland, public areas, and personal spaces can
15 contribute to the protection and enhancement of pollinator
16 habitats; and
17 Whereas, Designating a specific week to focus on pollinators
18 would provide a valuable opportunity to educate Michigan citizens
19 about the economic stability and health benefits associated with
20 pollinators; and
21 Whereas, Michigan Pollinators Week is dedicated to raising
22 awareness about the importance of pollinators, promoting
23 pollinator-friendly practices, and encouraging the conservation of
24 pollinator habitats; now, therefore, be it
25 Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of
26 this legislative body declare June 19-25, 2023, as Pollinators Week
27 in the state of Michigan. We urge all Michigan citizens,
28 educational institutions, community organizations, and businesses
29 to participate in Michigan Pollinators Week by organizing

1 educational events, workshops, and initiatives that highlight the
2 significance of pollinators and promote actions to protect and
3 support their populations.
