Senate Bill 287 as passed by the Senate
Sponsor: Sen. Kevin Daley
House Committee: Health Policy
Senate Committee: Health Policy
Complete to 12-11-24
SUMMARY:
Senate Bill 287 would amend the Public Health Code to allow an urgent care center or a
physician’s private practice office to ask new patients if they are interested in information
on Michigan’s organ and tissue donor registry 1 or (for new patients who are 18 to 44 years
old) information on donating bone marrow. 2
Upon request, the center or office could provide the patient with, as applicable, educational
materials explaining the right to make an anatomical gift under the Public Health Code 3
and information describing the organ and tissue donor registry (including how to have
one’s name placed in the registry) or information on becoming a bone marrow donor.
Anatomical gift means a donation 4 of all or part of a human body to take effect
after the donor’s death for the purpose of transplantation, therapy, research, or
education.
Organ and tissue donor registry means a database that contains records of
anatomical gifts and amendments to or revocations of anatomical gifts as provided
for in section 10120 of the Public Health Code.
The information provided would have to include contact information for Michigan’s
federally designated organ procurement organization or contact information for bone
marrow donation programs in Michigan, as applicable.
The materials and information could be provided orally, in writing, or in electronic form.
