This bill modifies provisions of law governing the use of carbon monoxide detectors in this State. The bill does the following.
1. It requires that, beginning January 1, 2027, a person install carbon monoxide detectors in the bedrooms and areas giving access to the bedrooms of any newly constructed occupancy in accordance with the Life Safety Code of the National Fire Protection Association as adopted by the Commissioner of Public Safety.
2. It modifies language to permit, rather than require, the Commissioner of Public Safety to adopt rules pertaining to carbon monoxide detectors.
3. It modifies requirements related to carbon monoxide detectors in educational facilities to require an educational facility to install carbon monoxide detectors in accordance with the Life Safety Code of the National Fire Protection Association as adopted by the Commissioner of Public Safety, rather than requiring only a minimum of one carbon monoxide detector.
4. It also clarifies that the Office of the State Fire Marshal and certain other state, county and municipal officials are authorized to enforce the provisions of law related to carbon monoxide detectors.
