JOINT RESOLUTION TO EXPRESS THE LEGISLATURE'S
DEEPEST CONDOLENCES ON THE DEATHS OF MINNESOTA
REPRESENTATIVE MELISSA HORTMAN AND HER HUSBAND
MARK HORTMAN
WHEREAS, we have learned that targeted shootings of two Minnesota state lawmakers
took place on the morning of Saturday, June 14, 2025; and
WHEREAS, Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark,
were fatally shot inside their home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota in the early morning; and
WHEREAS, Minnesota State Senator John A. Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were also
shot multiple times in an earlier attack allegedly by the same assailant, but Mr. Hoffman and
his wife are expected to survive; and
WHEREAS, a suspect in the shootings has been apprehended; and
WHEREAS, both state lawmakers who were shot served critical roles in the Minnesota
State Legislature, with Mrs. Hortman having served as Speaker of the Minnesota House of
Representatives for a six-year period that ended this year and Mr. Hoffman, a fourth-term state
senator, chairing the Senate Human Services Committee; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That We, the Members of the One Hundred and Thirty-second Legislature
now assembled in the First Special Session, pause in our deliberations to extend to you, the
members of the Minnesota State Legislature, our deepest condolences for the deaths of your
colleague State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and we offer our
prayers and wishes for the well-being of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette; and
be it further
RESOLVED: That we condemn political violence and wish to express our horror, grief
and outrage and our concern for the victims of these shootings; and be it further
RESOLVED: That we extend to you our goodwill and hope for healing and our thanks for
your service, and we offer our support in any work you undertake to ameliorate the divisions
in our civic life that give rise to these acts of violence.
