JOINT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING MAY 18, 2025 AS ASIAN
AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER DAY AGAINST
BULLYING AND HATE
WHEREAS, May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month; and
WHEREAS, observed annually on May 18th, the birthday of Vincent Chin, who was
brutally murdered in a hate crime, Asian American and Pacific Islander Day Against Bullying
and Hate provides an opportunity for all Mainers to pursue empathy, promote civility and stand
up against bigotry; and
WHEREAS, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a rise in bullying,
discrimination and hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community;
and
WHEREAS, eighty percent of Asian American youth report being bullied, online or in
school; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED: That We, the Members of the One Hundred and Thirty-second Legislature
now assembled in the First Special Session, on behalf of the people we represent, take this
opportunity to recognize, in memory of Vincent Chin, May 18, 2025 as Asian American and
Pacific Islander Day Against Bullying and Hate; and be it further
RESOLVED: That We join all Mainers in denouncing violence, discrimination, bullying
and hate in all forms and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that every Mainer is safe,
welcomed and empowered to stand proud in identity.
