This bill aims to establish a comprehensive screening program for pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS) and pediatric acute onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) within medical and clinical settings. It amends various sections of the General Laws, including Chapter 32A, Chapter 111, Chapter 112, Chapter 175, Chapter 176A, Chapter 176B, and Chapter 176G, to incorporate the term "screening" in relation to these disorders. Specifically, it mandates that the Department of Public Health develop a program and working criteria for screening, as well as regulations for healthcare providers to follow.
Additionally, the bill requires that all licensed healthcare professionals, including physicians, child psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health counselors, conduct screenings for PANDAS and PANS at specified intervals. Healthcare facilities serving children must also ensure that their patients receive these screenings. The Department of Public Health is tasked with implementing the necessary regulations within 180 days of the bill's effective date, while the provisions related to healthcare professionals will take effect 270 days after the bill's enactment.
