The proposed bill, known as Freddy's Law, aims to enhance the safety of student athletes in Massachusetts by mandating that high school athletes undergo at least one electrocardiogram (ECG) screening before participating in interscholastic athletic competitions, starting in the 2026-2027 school year. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) will be responsible for developing the necessary policies and procedures related to this requirement, which will address compliance, protocols for abnormal results, religious exemptions, and the transferability of screening results.
Additionally, the bill amends several chapters of the General Laws to ensure that various insurance policies provide coverage for the required ECG screening for high school-aged MIAA athletes. Specifically, it mandates that the Group Insurance Commission, as well as individual and group health insurance plans, including medical expense coverage, hospital service plans, and health maintenance contracts, must include coverage for one ECG screening. This comprehensive approach aims to protect the health of student athletes and ensure that financial barriers do not prevent them from receiving necessary screenings.
