The bill amends Chapter 48 of the General Laws to ensure that full-time firefighters receive regular neurological disorder screenings. Specifically, it mandates that these screenings be conducted by a physician no less than three years after the firefighter's employment begins and every three years thereafter. The requirement extends to members of specific fire departments, including those associated with the Massachusetts military reservation, the 104th fighter wing, and the Devens fire department. Additionally, the bill defines certain entities as fire districts for the purposes of this legislation.
The screenings must cover a range of neurological disorders, including but not limited to Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Alzheimer's disease, brain tumors, cerebral palsy, dementia, epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke. Importantly, the bill stipulates that all costs associated with these screenings will be covered by the firefighters' health care benefits plan, with no co-payments or out-of-pocket expenses required, unless such provisions would jeopardize the tax-exempt status of the plan under federal law.
