The proposed bill, known as the Seizure-Safe Schools Act, mandates that each public and private school district must have at least one trained employee capable of administering seizure rescue medications and using a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS) magnet. The training for these employees will include recognizing seizure symptoms and responding appropriately. Additionally, the bill requires that all relevant school personnel, including teachers and bus drivers, receive training on seizure recognition and first aid. Schools must also collaborate with parents to create individualized seizure action plans for students diagnosed with seizure disorders, which will be kept on file and shared with staff responsible for the student's care.
Furthermore, the bill stipulates that written authorization from a student's parent or guardian is necessary before administering any seizure medications, and this authorization must be renewed annually. It also provides legal protection for school employees who act in good faith while assisting students with seizure disorders, ensuring they are not liable for civil damages when following the prescribed health plans. The act will take effect one year after its enactment.
