This bill amends Chapter 111 of the General Laws to establish a framework for measuring the impact of Long COVID, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC), in the Commonwealth. It mandates the creation of a surveillance case definition for Long COVID that aligns with the standards set by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM). The Department of Public Health is tasked with determining effective methods for conducting active surveillance on Long COVID to understand its prevalence and impact on the population and healthcare systems, as well as to inform public health interventions.
Additionally, the bill requires the development of a case report form to support surveillance efforts, which will collect various demographic and clinical information from patients diagnosed with Long COVID. The Department is expected to commence active public health surveillance six months after the bill's enactment and to provide annual statewide surveillance reports to the public. Furthermore, within one year of enactment, the Department must report to legislative leaders on the progress of Long COVID surveillance efforts, including the status of the surveillance form and initial results.
