The bill amends Chapter 94C by adding a new section, 19G, which expands the role of pharmacists as healthcare providers. Under this new section, pharmacists are authorized to order, test, screen, and treat specific health conditions, including influenza, streptococcal infections, and COVID-19, as well as other public health threats identified by the department. The department is tasked with establishing standard procedures for these activities, and pharmacists are permitted to use tests that comply with federal regulations. Additionally, pharmacists can delegate certain testing tasks to pharmacy technicians under their supervision.
Furthermore, the bill ensures that pharmacists will not face reimbursement denials from health benefit plans for services they provide that fall within their licensed scope, as long as these services would be covered if performed by a physician, advanced practice nurse, or physician's assistant. Insurance carriers and pharmacy benefit managers are required to create appropriate provider and consult codes to facilitate compensation for pharmacists' services.
