The bill outlines the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center's (MassCEC) obligation to develop an annual projection of the availability of Light-Duty Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in the state, as mandated by Chapter 179 of the Acts of 2022, An Act Driving Clean Energy and Offshore Wind. For the remainder of 2024, MassCEC estimates that approximately 40,000 light-duty BEVs will be available in Massachusetts, based on data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles. This projection excludes Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs) and is subject to change due to factors such as consumer demand and supply chain issues.
To fulfill the requirements of the legislation, MassCEC has created the EV Webpages Program, which includes resources for various audiences, including residential consumers and vehicle dealers. The program aims to educate the public about electric vehicles and their availability. MassCEC will continue to provide annual projections each January, starting in 2025, to keep stakeholders informed about the evolving landscape of electric vehicle availability in Massachusetts. The analysis conducted by MassCEC indicates that while the projected availability is based on current data, actual numbers may vary due to market dynamics and dealership practices.
