Methuen be authorized to raise the maximum retirement age of special
police officers in said city to 70 years old, reports recommending that the
accompanying bill (House, No. 4895) ought to pass [Local Approval
Received].

An Act authorizing raising the maximum retirement age of special police officers in the city of
Methuen to 70 years old.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court assembled, and by the authority
of the same, as follows:
1 SECTION 1. The mayor of the City of Methuen may, if the mayor deems necessary
2 following the recommendation of the Chief of Police, appoint individuals, who have served as
3 police officers and who are currently certified by Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)
4 Commission, to serve as special police officers for the purpose of performing traffic details.
5 SECTION 2. Notwithstanding section 1 of chapter 32 of the General Laws or any other
6 general or special law to the contrary, the maximum age for a special police officer appointed in
7 the City of Methuen shall be 70 years of age.
8 SECTION 3. Special police officers who are between the ages of 65-70 years of age shall
9 only perform traffic details in the City of Methuen.
10 SECTION. 4. No further deductions shall be made from the regular compensation of any
11 individual over the age of 65 appointed pursuant to this Act under chapter 32 of the General
12 Laws and, upon retirement, said individuals appointed pursuant to this Act shall receive a

13 superannuation retirement allowance equal to the allowance to which he would have been
14 entitled had he retired upon reaching the age of 65.
15 SECTION 5. This act shall take effect upon passage.
