House Resolution No. by Representative Spell urges the Louisiana Department of Health to collaborate with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and other stakeholders to conduct a comprehensive study on the prevention and reduction of diabetes-related amputations. Diabetes is a significant public health concern in Louisiana, leading to preventable lower-limb amputations that result in human suffering and increased healthcare costs. The resolution emphasizes the need for early detection, coordinated care, and patient education to prevent these amputations, as well as the importance of improved data collection and collaboration among public and private entities.
The study will focus on various aspects, including the prevalence and costs associated with diabetes-related amputations, evidence-based best practices for prevention, and strategies to enhance access to limb-saving services. It will also explore public-private partnerships and preventative services, while examining amputations related to diabetic foot ulcers and peripheral artery disease. A workgroup of subject-matter experts will assist in the study, and the Louisiana Department of Health is required to submit a report of findings and recommendations to the legislature by December 1, 2026.
