Senate Bill No. 501, known as the "Campus Awareness Initiative," mandates that public postsecondary education institutions in Louisiana display signs promoting sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention, screening, and treatment. The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) or its designated nonprofit organization is responsible for designing and producing these signs, which must include the text "Worried about STIs? Just Check!" along with a website link to the LDH's STI resources. The signs are required to be at least 16 inches by 20 inches, printed on durable material, and feature large, easily readable text.
Additionally, the bill outlines that student health center staff must display these signs in various patient areas, including admission, waiting, and consultation rooms. The LDH is not obligated to use its own funds for the signs; instead, it may utilize donated funds or accept donated signs, provided they are approved by the department. The bill also defines what constitutes a "designated nonprofit organization" in relation to the initiative. The act will take effect upon the governor's signature or after the designated time for gubernatorial action.
