Senate Bill No. 419, introduced by Senator Kleinpeter, amends R.S. 56:116(C) to allow the use of pre-charged pneumatic devices for deer hunting during the primitive firearm season in Louisiana. The bill retains the existing authority of the commission to establish special deer hunting seasons and regulate the types of weapons that can be used. It specifically mandates that the commission's rules must include provisions for the use of pre-charged pneumatic devices that meet certain specifications, including a minimum caliber of .30, a projectile weight of at least 150 grains, and a minimum muzzle velocity of 800 feet per second, or any combination that results in at least 215 foot-pounds of energy.
Additionally, the bill clarifies that the taking of deer during the primitive firearm season will be limited to still hunting and may be permitted in designated areas where deer hunting is currently allowed or will be allowed in the future. It also allows licensees to use magnified scopes on any weapon authorized for use during this season. The changes outlined in the bill will take effect on August 1, 2026.
