Senate Bill No. by Senator Barrow proposes the enactment of the "Voter Protection Act," which aims to enhance voter protections in Louisiana. The bill introduces a series of provisions that prohibit voter intimidation and misinformation, ensuring that no individual can knowingly deceive or coerce voters regarding their eligibility, registration requirements, polling locations, or voting procedures. Violations of these provisions are classified as misdemeanors, with enhanced felony penalties for organized voter suppression. Additionally, the bill mandates the development of standardized, accessible voter registration materials, extends the voter registration deadline by seven days, and requires the expansion of secure online and mobile-friendly registration services.
The legislation also establishes a 600-foot no-interference zone around polling places to prevent electioneering and the dissemination of false information during early voting and on election day. It requires polling places to display signage outlining voter rights and mandates reasonable accommodations for voters with disabilities. Furthermore, the bill stipulates that registrars must notify voters whose registration status is inactive and that the Secretary of State must publish an annual report on voter roll maintenance activities. Protections for voter assistance providers acting in good faith are also included, and individuals aggrieved by violations of the Act are granted the right to seek injunctive relief. The provisions of this Act will take effect on August 1, 2026.
