This bill enacts new provisions in Louisiana law regarding commercial menhaden reduction fishery vessels, specifically requiring the use of automatic identification systems (AIS). It defines an "automatic identification system" as a VHF radio-based tracking system that enables vessels to exchange data such as position, speed, and heading with other vessels, shore stations, and satellites. The bill mandates that all vessels engaged in commercial menhaden reduction fishing, including carrier vessels and purse boats, must have a functioning AIS installed. Furthermore, it stipulates that no vessel can engage in fishing for more than two consecutive business days without a functioning AIS, and at least two vessels in a cooperating group must have their AIS operational while fishing.
Additionally, the bill directs the Louisiana State Law Institute to organize and renumber certain definitions within the law to ensure clarity and consistency. The provisions of this act will take effect on April 19, 2027.
