This bill enacts R.S. 22:1037.1, which mandates health insurance coverage for healthcare services performed by certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs). It stipulates that for any service performed by a CRNA without medical direction from a physician or dentist, the reimbursement amount must be at least equal to what the insurer would pay for the same service if performed by a physician. Additionally, the bill prohibits insurers from denying CRNAs participation or inclusion in their networks based solely on their provider type or licensure. It clarifies that the new provisions do not alter the scope of practice for any licensed healthcare professional.
The provisions of this Act will apply to new policies, contracts, or health coverage plans issued on or after January 1, 2027, with existing plans required to conform by their renewal date, but no later than January 1, 2028. The Act is set to take effect on January 1, 2027.
