Senate Bill No. 234, known as the "Medical School Letter Grade Act," mandates that all public postsecondary education institutions in Louisiana offering medical doctorate degrees implement a letter-based grading scale for their coursework starting in the 2026-2027 academic year. The grading scale must include letter grades of A, B, C, D, or F, with the option for plus or minus designations for grades A through D, or an alternative tiered system that includes at least four designations.
Additionally, the bill empowers the Board of Regents to enforce these grading policies and to establish civil penalties for any violations. It also includes a severability clause, ensuring that if any part of the law is deemed invalid, the remaining provisions will still be effective. The law is set to take effect on July 1, 2026, unless vetoed by the governor and subsequently approved by the legislature.
