Senate Bill No. by Senator Edmonds proposes the creation of a special prestige license plate known as the "Fallen Heroes" plate, which will be established by the secretary of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, contingent upon receiving a minimum of 1,000 applications. The license plate will be available for use on various types of vehicles, including passenger cars, pickup trucks, recreational vehicles, motorcycles, and vans. The design of the plate will include the words "Fallen Heroes" and must comply with existing design regulations. The Department of Public Safety and Corrections will also be responsible for creating the plate once their electronic vehicle and title registration system is updated.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that an annual royalty fee of $25 will be collected for the "Fallen Heroes" plate, which will be in addition to the standard motor vehicle license tax. This fee will be forwarded to the Capital Area Law Enforcement Foundation to fund the purchase of bulletproof vests for peace officers in Louisiana. The secretary is also tasked with promulgating necessary rules and regulations to implement these provisions. The bill is set to take effect on August 1, 2026.
