The bill amends existing Louisiana law regarding prostate cancer screening by expanding insurance coverage to include screening for men aged forty to forty-nine, in accordance with the guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. Specifically, it modifies R.S. 22:1028(B)(1) to remove the previous requirement that screening for this age group be "medically necessary and appropriate," thereby mandating coverage for all men within this age range. Additionally, a new provision, R.S. 22:1028(B)(3), is enacted to ensure that any required coverage for prostate cancer screening will not involve any out-of-pocket expenses, including deductibles, coinsurance, or copayments.
The provisions of this Act will apply to any new health coverage plans issued on or after January 1, 2027, with existing plans required to conform to the new regulations by their renewal date, but no later than January 1, 2028. The Act will take effect upon the governor's signature or, if not signed, after the designated period for bills to become law without signature. If vetoed and later approved by the legislature, the Act will become effective the day after such approval.
