The House Concurrent Resolution establishes the Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) Task Force in Louisiana to study and recommend best practices for managing and mitigating the spread of CWD, a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting deer species. CWD was first detected in Louisiana in 2022 and poses significant risks to the state's deer population and related economic activities, such as hunting and breeding. The resolution outlines the need for a comprehensive approach to evaluate existing management policies, coordinate information sharing among state agencies, and develop effective containment protocols for both wild and captive deer populations.
The task force will consist of members from state government, non-governmental organizations, private industry, and federal representatives, with the House-appointed member serving as chairman. The task force is tasked with assessing current testing and tracking practices, monitoring CWD cases, and identifying necessary updates to regulations. It is required to submit a report of its findings and recommendations to relevant legislative committees before the 2027 Regular Session. The Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will provide staffing support for the task force, which will operate without compensation for its members, except for travel reimbursements for state agency representatives.
