House Resolution No. by Representative Lacombe honors Elmo "Buddy" Sholes, a centenarian and World War II veteran, for his remarkable life and service to the United States. Born on December 26, 1920, in Wilson, Louisiana, Mr. Sholes served in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in the Philippines and the Pacific Islands, ultimately rising to the rank of corporal. After the war, he married Trogia Eunice Goins in 1943, and they spent over two decades in Newark, New Jersey, before returning to Louisiana. The couple, who had no children, played a significant role in the lives of their nieces and nephews and shared a loving marriage for sixty-six years until Mrs. Sholes' passing in 2009.
In addition to his military service, Mr. Sholes has been an active member of the Church of God in Christ in Morganza, Louisiana, for over sixty-five years, holding various leadership positions, including elder and pastor. He currently serves as superintendent emeritus of the Louisiana East Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the World War II Coin by Governor Jeff Landry on May 5, 2025. The resolution expresses the Louisiana House of Representatives' commendation and appreciation for Mr. Sholes' dedication to his country and community.
