The bill amends R.S. 17:24.4 to enhance the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program by specifying the administration of standards-based assessments in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. It mandates that assessments in English language arts and mathematics be conducted in grades three through eight and at least once in grades nine through eleven. Additionally, by the 2027-2028 school year, assessments in science and social studies will be required in no more than four grade levels each, with the stipulation that these tests are not given in the same grade levels. The bill also allows for retesting opportunities for students.
Furthermore, the bill outlines that the state Department of Education will set achievement levels for proficiency in mathematics and English language arts for fourth and eighth graders, which are necessary for advancement to the next grade. The department will also determine intervention options for students who do not demonstrate proficiency. Additionally, the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is tasked with investigating the use of nationally normed or criterion-referenced assessments to meet federal requirements and will report its findings by February 6, 2026.
