This bill amends existing Louisiana election law regarding the recognition and registration of political parties. It raises the requirement for a political party to be recognized from one thousand to five thousand registered voters and increases the registration fee from one thousand to five thousand dollars. Additionally, it prohibits the recognition of any political party that declares its name solely as "Independent" or the "Independent Party." The bill also establishes a procedure for political parties to request dissolution, allowing them to file a notarized dissolution statement with the Secretary of State.
Furthermore, the bill introduces changes to voter registration regarding party affiliation. Starting August 1, 2025, individuals registering to vote will not be designated as "Independent" or affiliated with the "Independent Party"; instead, their affiliation will be recorded as "No Party." Those already registered as "Independent" or affiliated with the "Independent Party" before this date will also have their affiliation changed to "No Party," with the Department of State required to notify them of this change.
