This bill enacts R.S. 22:1077.4, which mandates that health insurance providers in Louisiana must cover integrative cancer treatments, specifically including acupuncture, cryotherapy, and scalp cooling systems, when these treatments are recommended by nationally recognized cancer treatment guidelines. The coverage may be subject to standard plan conditions such as annual deductibles, coinsurance, copayments, and prior authorization. Additionally, the bill defines a "scalp cooling system" as a device designed to cool the scalp to prevent hair loss during chemotherapy, emphasizing that it must be intended for repeated medical use.
The provisions of this act will apply to any new health coverage plans issued on or after January 1, 2026, and existing plans must conform to these requirements by their renewal date, but no later than January 1, 2027. The act is set to take effect on January 1, 2026. Furthermore, the bill allows health insurance issuers to limit acupuncture treatment for active cancer to fifteen visits per year unless additional treatments are recommended by recognized guidelines and the treating physician.
