The bill amends and reenacts R.S. 17:87.6(C)(1) and introduces new provisions R.S. 17:87.6(C)(6) and (7) regarding the alienation of school property by school boards in Louisiana. It authorizes local public school boards to sell, trade, or participate in buyback programs for individual computing devices that have been used by students for classwork. This change allows for greater flexibility in managing school technology resources, notwithstanding any conflicting laws.
Additionally, the bill stipulates that revenue generated from the sale of these devices can be used for acquiring, maintaining, or improving technology resources within the school or school district. It also mandates that prior to the alienation of any device, school boards must securely erase all sensitive data, including student and employee information, in compliance with data security policies set by the state Department of Education and relevant regulations.
