The Senate Resolution establishes the Task Force on Education Participation of Student Mothers in Louisiana, aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by student mothers—individuals with dependent children attending postsecondary institutions. These challenges include limited access to affordable childcare, work interruptions, and increased food and housing insecurities, which can hinder their educational and workforce participation. The task force is tasked with studying ways to enhance educational opportunities for student mothers, ultimately proposing legislative recommendations to support their advancement in education and the workforce.
The task force will consist of key members from the Senate and relevant state agencies, including the president of the Senate, the chairpersons of the Senate Education and Women and Children Committees, and commissioners from higher education and workforce sectors. It will identify demographic data on student parents, assess existing resources and programming, and pinpoint gaps that need to be addressed. The task force is required to submit its findings and recommendations by March 1, 2025, and will be staffed by the Senate Committee on Education, with its first meeting scheduled for September 15, 2024. Members will serve without compensation, and the task force will dissolve upon submission of its report or by the specified date.
