The Louisiana Legislature has passed a resolution to commend Police Officer Alan Cortez for receiving the prestigious TOP COPS Award, presented annually by the National Association of Police (NAPO) since 1994. This award honors law enforcement officers across the nation for their exceptional actions beyond the call of duty. Officer Cortez, who has been with the Lafayette Police Department since April 2022 and also serves in the Louisiana National Guard, was recognized for his bravery during a dangerous incident on August 5, 2023, where he and his fellow officers responded to a disturbance and faced an armed suspect.

During the incident, Officer Cortez displayed remarkable courage by remaining inside a residence to ensure the safety of others, even after sustaining injuries. His actions, along with those of Officers Raynard Ford and Hali Bradford, and Corporals Adam Bradford and Maverick Morvant, exemplified the highest standards of bravery and dedication to duty, ultimately saving Officer Bradford's life. The resolution not only commends Officer Cortez for his heroism but also highlights the collective bravery of the officers involved in the incident, reinforcing their commitment to protecting and serving their community.
