The resolution establishes the Comite River Diversion Canal/Amite River Basin Task Force to study and recommend actions necessary for the completion of the Comite River Diversion Project, aimed at mitigating flooding in the Greater Baton Rouge Metropolitan Area and surrounding parishes. The task force will address the significant flooding issues caused by the Comite and Amite rivers, which have historically led to catastrophic flooding events, notably in 1983 and 2016. The project is designed to divert floodwaters from the upper Comite River to the Mississippi River, potentially reducing flood stages by up to fifty percent once completed.
The task force will consist of various appointed members, including state legislators, local officials, and representatives from relevant organizations, and will be chaired by the state senator for Senate District 13. The task force is required to convene by July 31, 2024, and submit its recommendations to the appropriate legislative committees by February 1, 2025. It will operate without compensation for its members, except for potential per diem or expense reimbursements, and will receive staff support from the Senate. The task force will dissolve upon the submission of its report or by April 13, 2025, whichever comes first.
