COURTS/COURT REPORTERS EN INCREASE LF RV See Note Page 1 of 1
Provides relative to court reporter fees in the Fourteenth Judicial District
Current law provides that in all cases reported and transcribed in the 14th Judicial District for appeal, a fee of $3.25 per
page for originals, and $0.75 per page for each copy, shall be charged by and paid to the reporter; provides that in those
cases which are reported but not transcribed, one-half of the fees provided for originals or copies of cases reported shall be
charged by and paid to the reporter. Proposed law extends the application of fees to all cases reported and transcribed in the
14th Judicial District; provides that in all cases, a majority of the judges shall determine the amount of the fee paid to the
court reporter for the transcription of each page of all testimony reported and transcribed and the amount of the fee per
copy of each page of transcribed testimony, and that a majority of the judges shall determine the amount of the fee paid for
cases reported but not transcribed and that fees shall be retained by the reporter; provides that any change in costs or fees
becomes effective if and when the Judicial Council provides a recommendation that the costs or fees meet applicable
guidelines in its report to the legislature; provides that no fees shall be imposed or collected w/o Judicial Council approval.

EXPENDITURE EXPLANATION
There is no anticipated direct material effect on governmental expenditures as a result of this measure.
The proposed law may result in an additional workload in the 14th Judicial District Court related to court reporters producing
originals and copies of cases reported and transcribed. To the extent that the 14th Judicial District Court experiences an
increase in workload, the LFO presumes that it can be handled using existing staff and resources.
REVENUE EXPLANATION
The proposed legislation will likely result in an indeterminable increase in Local Funds revenue to the 14th Judicial District
Court. Proposed law extends the application of fees to all cases that are reported and transcribed in the 14th Judicial
District, and not only those reported and transcribed for appeal, and allows a majority of judges to set the amount of the fee
paid to the court reporter for transcription of each page of all testimony reported and transcribed. The exact fiscal impact to
Local Funds revenue is indeterminable, because it is not known the number of cases that will be reported and transcribed,
notwithstanding those already transcribed for appeal, in the future, or the rates at which the majority of judges will choose
to set the fees for transcription and reporting.
