The bill amends existing Louisiana law regarding health insurance coverage for diagnostic imaging related to breast cancer. It specifically updates the definition of "diagnostic imaging" to include
contrast-enhanced mammograms and breast magnetic resonance imaging, in addition to the previously covered diagnostic mammograms and breast ultrasound screenings. Furthermore, it expands the criteria for diagnostic imaging by including
additional factors that may increase the individual's risk of breast cancer alongside the existing criteria based on medical history or family medical history.
The provisions of this Act will apply to any new health insurance policies, contracts, or coverage plans issued on or after January 1, 2025. Existing policies will need to conform to the new requirements by their renewal date, but no later than January 1, 2026. The Act will take effect upon the governor's signature or, if not signed, after the designated period for bills to become law without signature. If vetoed and later approved by the legislature, the Act will become effective the day after such approval.
