This bill enacts new provisions under R.S. 32:232(3) regarding penalties for traffic-control signal violations, specifically focusing on red light infractions. The legislation introduces three new subsections (e), (f), and (g) that establish increased penalties based on the severity of the consequences resulting from the violation.
Under the new provisions, if a red light violation results in injury to another person, the offender faces a fine ranging from $200 to $500 and may have their driver's license suspended for 90 days. For serious bodily injury, the penalties increase to a fine of $500 to $1,000, possible imprisonment for up to six months, and a 180-day license suspension. In cases where the violation leads to the death of another person, the offender could be fined between $1,000 and $5,000, face up to one year in prison, and have their driver's license suspended for up to 365 days.
