ACT 610 (HB 354) 2024 Regular Session Brass
Existing law authorizes parish governing authorities to create road lighting districts and to
consolidate existing districts. Road lighting districts are authorized to enter into contracts
with an electric public utility to provide and maintain electric lights on the roads and in
public places. Provides that the parish governing authority is the governing authority of such
a district and the parish treasurer is the district's treasurer. Authorizes road lighting districts
to levy ad valorem taxes subject to voter approval.
New law provides that a parish governing authority may authorize road lighting districts and
consolidated road lighting districts to use up to 25% of their funds to purchase, install,
operate, and maintain electronic safety equipment. Authorizes the parish governing authority
to designate a district that is authorized to use funds in accordance with new law as a
"security and road lighting district".
New law directs the La. State Law Institute to reorganize existing law relative to road
lighting districts.
Effective August 1, 2024.
