DIGEST
SB 102 Engrossed 2024 Regular Session Miguez
Present law specifies that a board of commissioners for a port in parishes which have a population
of 68,000 to 73,000 and 57,000 to 57,400, respectively as determined by the latest federal decennial
census may appoint, fix salaries of, and pay port and harbor police who have completed a course
certified by the Council on Peace Officer Standards and Training to perform law enforcement duties
commensurate with powers of sheriffs. Present law further allows a commission of a port in a
designated population to adopt rules and regulations for the conduct, management, and control of
the port and harbor police, and shall, from time to time, enlarge, modify, or change such rules and
regulations in its discretion.
Proposed law retains present law but removes the population designation.
Present law provides for arrestees of the port and harbor police to be delivered to the sheriff of the
parish in which the arrest occurs, and provides that such authority does not deprive law enforcement
from a parish with a population of 68,000 to 73,000 or 57,000 to 57,400, according to the latest
federal decennial census, from performing their duties.
Proposed law retains present law but removes the population designation and identifies the parishes
of Iberia and Vermilion.
Effective upon signature of the governor or lapse of time for gubernatorial action.
