This bill enacts R.S. 33:2581.4, which mandates cancer screening examinations for classified firefighters and fire service employees in Louisiana. The legislation specifies that these screenings must be conducted by a physician, with the initial examination occurring no less than three years after employment. Subsequent screenings are scheduled based on age: every five years for those aged 20-39, every four years for those aged 40-49, and every three years for those aged 50 and older. The screenings will cover various types of cancers, including colon, lung, bladder, and breast cancers, among others.

Additionally, the bill provides that retired firefighters and fire service employees, including those who retire due to disability, are entitled to the same cancer screening examinations as active employees. All costs associated with these screenings will be covered by the employer or former employer, with no out-of-pocket expenses required from the employees. Participation in the screenings is voluntary, and the provisions do not apply to individuals who have resigned or been terminated. The bill also clarifies that personal health insurance companies are not obligated to cover screenings conducted more frequently than recommended by established cancer organizations.
